Holographic foil

'A metallic foil with 2D or 3D patterns in futuristic colours'

Holographic foil makes an extraordinary visual design statement!
The effects of holographic foils are extremely popular. It immediately appeals to most consumers. The reflection of the light causes a pattern, design or image in the foil to change colour. The larger a hologram, the more incidence of light and the more 'spatial' the holographic reflection. The effect of a hologram is magical and can be a great way to get noticed by consumers.

Holographic foil is not only decorative, it can also be a way to secure a product or brand. A hologram is difficult to imitate or copy. A hologram is a visible (striking) feature on packaging or a label. Whether a brand needs such an authenticity feature in the form of a hologram in order to prevent counterfeiting and fraud depends on the value of a product.

How do we print holographic foil?
Holographic foil is applied to a print by means of foil stamping. At Vrijdag Premium Printing we apply foil by means of heat and pressure. This technique is also called hot stamping foil, hot foil, hot foil stamping, hot stamp or hot foiling. Holographic foil is therefore printed in the same way as, for example, metallic, pearlescent or pigment foil. The foil is transferred onto the underlying paper or cardboard by means of a cliché (metal plate). Heat and pressure smooth out irregularities and any roughness in the paper or cardboard used.

How many different holographic foil patterns are available?
Holographic foils are available in various patterns! These patterns or designs can range from dots, squares, cracked ice, rainbow, pillars of light, snowflakes and swirls. There are countless variations of ready-to-use holographic foils available, but if the right pattern design is not included, it is also possible to have your own design made.

What is the difference between 2D and 3D holographic images?
2D holographic foil gives a flat image that is characterised by patterns, designs and changes in colours. 3D holographic foil represents a spatial image, photograph or object. With 3D holographic foil, the colour changes are endless and this always depends on the incidence of light on the foil.

How many different holographic foil patterns are available?
Holographic hot stamping foils are available in countless variations, such as silver, gold, transparent and a wide range of other metallic colours. It is good to know that silver or gold foil generally generates the best holographic effect.

Can holographic foil be printed on paper and cardboard?
Yes, we can print holographic foils on both paper and cardboard.

Are holographic films durable?
Pearlescent foil consists of a plastic carrier and a wafer-thin metallic layer. This metallic layer of a few microns thick is transferred to the paper or cardboard. A pilot is currently underway to recycle and reuse the plastic carrier.

Is the holographic foil printing effect suitable for labels and packaging?
Yes, holographic foil print effects are suitable for almost all labels and packaging.

Holographic foils and printing security
Holographic foil can be applied to prints or products as a security element against fraud and counterfeiting. A hologram is difficult to imitate or copy. Would you like to add a unique visible feature to your product? Then holographic foil is definitely an option. Friday Premium Printing offers you this opportunity. More information about secure printing can be found on our website.

Does holographic foil combine well with other print effects?
Yes, holographic foil combines well with other printing effects. Especially when a brand or product must be protected against fraud or counterfeiting, it is advisable to combine holographic foil with other printing effects. These can be visible and invisible security printing techniques. Examples of visible printing techniques include embossing and microstructures. Invisible printing techniques include infrared ink, ultraviolet ink, thermochromic ink and DNA ink. Combining print effects is therefore not only useful as a security element, it creates a unique appearance.

Design tips

  • A hologram is difficult to imitate or copy
  • The larger a hologram, the more incidence of light, reflection and the more 'spatial' the effect
  • The possibilities of holographic patterns or images are endless
  • It is possible to have your own hologram design (possibly with logo) made
  • There are countless ready-to-use holographic foils available
  • Holographic foil can be applied to prints or products as a security element against fraud and counterfeiting
  • 2D holographic foil gives a flat image that is characterised by patterns, designs and changes in colours.
  • 3D holographic foil displays a spatial image, photo or object, the colour changes here are, naturally, also endless
  • Use holographic foil in moderation. Too much on the print can detract from the effect
